The Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West.

Over the last decade I have tried unsuccessfully and on many occasions, to have Benalla Rural City amend their Planning Maps to accurately reflect the correct location of the Heritage Listing of the site.

The Heritage overlay is meant to protect the Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West,
but it is wrongly identified in a number of ways and
Benalla Rural City have not appeared to be concerned at their Heritage Overlay technical errors.

The first map is to be found on:

The map shows "HO24" in the wrong location (to the West) namely on Property 57,
whilst Mrs. Kelly’s actual heritage homestead site is located next door on 57A (to the East).

On the above map Mrs. Kelly’s original 80-acre property is to be seen on Greta Road at 57A. 
A simple 'on the ground' observation of 57A readily reveals this error;
the remnants of an old building(s) are still to be seen today on the actual site.

The current owners of 57A are Kelly family descendants and I am sure the site is well protected by family,
if not by the Benalla Rural City Planning Department.

However, it does get a little more complex:
The Heritage Map identifier HO24 shown on the map above is really the identifier for the old Benalla Water Supply Depot, Riverview Road, Benalla, and not the Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West.

The actual identifier for the Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West is HO37.
This HO37 listing is meant to protect -
all fencing, bridges and outbuilding remains at the Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West:
But as one can see above the site is geographically incorrectly identified and also incorrectly labeled for Heritage listing.  

Now whilst Heritage identifier HO24 for the old Benalla Water Supply Depot in Riverview Road, Benalla,
is possibly listed correctly on the above pdf document it is intimated that it is also included
on the Victorian Heritage Register under the Heritage Act 1995.

Whilst, the Kelly Homestead Site Greta Road Glenrowan West is identified as HO37 on the above pdf document,
it appears that it is not listed on the Victorian Heritage Register under the Heritage Act 1995.

Who knows why this has occurred. 
It may be that the Kelly Family of Greta Road Glenrowan West were not then the flavour of the month,
but with all the attention to Ned Kelly today things may change.
