The Ash

Ash - Fraxinus excelsior, belonging to the Oleaceae family.

The Ash is a large magnificent deciduous tree with an unkempt rounded crown and has very distinctive black buds in spring, that grows to a height of 40 to 45 metres, with an age of up to about 200 years.  The bark of the truck of the Ash is grey and smooth.
The black buds of the Ash appear before its pinnate leaves appear, which divide into 7 to 12 leaflets.
The Ash is found on most soils, but prefers moist and well drained fertile soils.  It has been found at up to 400m in altitude.

It is fairly well distributed throughout the British Isles, but not in the far north of Scotland.   It is wide spread and very  common in the North of England, especially on soils that base rich.

The timber of the Ash is a pale creamy wood that is strong and elastic. It is used for hockey sticks, oars, paddles, rudders, billiard cues, cricket stumps and polo sticks (once it was used for policemen's truncheons).

The timber of the Ash has a furniture quality and it is used also for timber veneer.
