The Crab Apple

Crab Apple - Malus sylvestris. Also known as Irish Cran fia-uill, and of the family - Rosaceae. It is related in species to orchard Apples that are derived from Malus sylvestris.

It is a small thorny deciduous tree with a height of up to about 16m It is frequently found in Oak woods and hedges.

It can be found in its natural native distribution through out
the whole of the British Isles, with the exception of the
north of Scotland.



Its timber is a hard close grained wood that is useful for
wood carving, inlay work, mallets and wood screws. 
It has a pleasant aroma when burnt as firewood.

Its attractive small fruit are extremely sour, but sought
after for the making a good jelly either used by
themselves or with other fruits and berries.

It is also used for the making of  Crab Apple wine, that can be quite powerful.
