Armetriding Farm. (circa ~1570) Down Mill Lane (off Dawbers Lane) is Euxton's oldest farmhouse. Armetriding Farm is probably the second oldest building in Euxton, after the Parish Church. A date-stone '1570' can be found on its north wall. The date stone built into the farm retaining wall was believed to be from Sparrow Hall 'Richard : Johns 1662'. However, it appears that the 1662 date stone was actually set into the retaining wall by Bill Carr, who lived at the farm from 1953 to 1989. The 1662 date stone appears to be from a now demolished cottage, that was about 50 metres to the East of the Armetriding Cotton Mill, just under the old mill leat. What a setting, the mill leat just 10 metres to the North and the River just 60 metres to the South. The picture below was sent to me by Bob Swarbick whose family has had a relationship with the old farm. The 1881 census shows that a Thomas Swarbrick, wife Margaret and six children (aged 3 to 18 yrs) residing at 1 Armitriding Lane, Euxton. Farmer Swarbrick had 62 acres and employed a farm hand by the name of James Pilkington, 23 years of age. Armetriding Farm house is in the upper part of the photograph whilst below that is seen one of the old mills (now long gone) with the water pouring out of the leet that powered the many mills on the river. Should one require an accurate location for Armetriding Farm, it is located ~ very approximately, at: Latitude: 53:39:24 (North) Longitude 2:41:35 (West) based on Greenwich Observatory, London, England. Below is a recent picture send in by an Euxtonian who was out on one of our Walks around Euxton. Please Euxtonians, more pictures please ! ! ! Mrs Emma Heffron, (clairvoyant and more) lived on the farm in ~ 1942 to ~ 1953. She was my Mum and was she daunting! Mum could I know, read my mind. I recall her describing a number of spiritual visits with us, but the most interesting was the "Spirit" that met Mum on the staircase at Armetriding Farm. Mum had got us all to bed, Dad was very sick with pneumonia. Mum was coming up to bed, when down the stairs came the "Lady with the Lamp". The "Spirit" brushed right past my Mum and went straight out "through" the front door and down the long flight of stone steps that lead to Mill Lane. (The event was circa 1948). Life was never quite the same again. The map above shows the location of Armetriding Farm. Click here for Armetriding Farm Recipes Please click your "back" button to return to previous page. |
