The Hornbeam

Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus, of the family - Corylaceae.

It is a British native tree with a natural native distribution that does not include Euxton and Lancashire.



A sturdy deciduous tree superficially resembling Beech,
it grows to about 30m, with an age of about 150 years.

In habitat it prefers low lying rich soils or clays and is shade tolerant.  It is very good for hedging.

Its natural native distribution is in the south east of England,
the Thames Valley, South Wales and Somerset.
It is found in temperate Europe and Asia Minor.



It can be propagatied and grown from its seed, which is deeply dormant.   In nature seeds lie dormant on soil for 18 months, are frost hardy and are not normally damaged by Grey Squirrels.
Its seeds or nuts are attractive to birds.

The Hornbeam timber is extremely hard, white and is a close grained wood.   It is used for firewood and for producing charcoal, with other uses as cogwheels, butchers chopping blocks and various blunts tools.
