Horwich Secondary Technical School
Horwich Lancashire.
England.

Horwich Secondary Technical School had Esprit de Corps!

Alpha Beta the school class names (or numbers) for "top" students.  Gamma Delta the school class names (or numbers) for the "almost top" students.

The cap and blazer badge incorporated the Red and White Roses, a symbol of liberty and tragedy.

As a young army officer born and bred in Lancashire, but serving with Australia, in the Asia - Pacific region, one would always toast the Queen of England as:

The Duke of Lancaster!
(God bless Her)

or as

The Queen, The Duke of Lancaster!
(God bless Her)

To this day, Lancashire is the "Duchy of Lancashire" since the defeat and death of the then Duke (of Lancaster) in the War of the Roses!

Horwich Secondary Technical School is (or was) in the heart of Lancashire, just to the North of Manchester, nestled under Rivington Pike, a small mountain, about a thousand feet high, strategic enough for use as an early warning system
against potential invasion by the Spanish Armada.

From my bedroom window, in the Village of Euxton, some 8 miles away, to the West, I could see and would watch the tower on Rivington Pike, as I did my "Alpha Beta" homework.

As a future holder of the Queen's Commission (God bless Her), an Officer and a Gentleman to be, I longed to see the tower lit, its warning flames high in the sky, and hear the call:

Arise, my Lancashire, your Queen, your Duke, has need of thee!

(God bless Her)

Here, where "The Englishman" is apt to go, long ways from Lancashire's green hills, one yearns for

Queen and Duke  (God bless Her) and . . . . . Lancashire!

Arise, my Lancashire, your Queen, your Duke, has need of thee!

Captain A G Heffron, Royal Australian Engineers (Retired).
