The Common Oak

Common Oak - Quercus robur.  Also known as Pedunculate Oak, English Oak, Irish Dair, and belonging to the family - Fagaceae, and is related in species to Quercus Petraea.

It is a large deciduous tree and probably Britain’s commonest tree. It can grow to an height of about 30 - 40m, with an age of up to about 1000 years or more.

Its habitat tends to be fertile soils and can include heavy soils, with some mature trees tolerate flooding even by sea-water.
It is frequently found in mixed woodland.

Its natural native distribution is throughout Britain, Ireland and most of western Europe and Asia Minor.

It is propagated by its acorn seeds that are not dormant and can be planted as soon as collected.

Its timber is a pale brown strong wood.
It is used for the wine and spirit industry where wines and spirits matured in English Oak casks.   Depending on size and quality used for furniture, veneer, building timber, sawn timber, poles, fencing, firewood and charcoal.
