The Rowan

Rowan - Sorbus aucuparia.   It is also known as the Mountain Ash, Gaelic Caorunn, Welsh Cerddin, Irish Caorthann, is of the family Rosaceae. The Rowan is related to other Sorbus species.

The Rowan is a small vigorous hardy deciduous tree producing large number of red berries in autumn.   It grows to a height of about 15m, and can live up to an age of 100 years reaching the height of about 18m.

Its habitat is light and peaty soils that are not water logged,
and can be found at up to 1000m altitude.

The Rowan has a natural native distribution throughout the whole of Britain and Ireland, but is found to most common in the west and north of Britain.   It is also found throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor.

It is propagation and grown from its seed.   The berries of the Rowan are much enjoyed by birds who disperse seed, thus aiding its propagation.

The timber of the Rowan is a dense hard pale brown wood, that has uses in wood turning and carving.   It has been used in the past for the making of bows, tool handles, mallet heads, bowls and platters.
