The Strawberry Tree

Strawberry Tree - Arbutus unedo.  It is also known as Irish Caithne or Suglair, and of the family - Ericaceae.  Related species include Arbutus andrachne (Cyprus Strawberry Tree) and the Arbutus menziescii  (Pacific Madrone).

It is a British native tree with a natural native distribution that does not include Euxton and Lancashire.

The Strawberry Tree is an evergreen shrubby tree with
leaves that are laurel like, with a warty red berry that has the
appearance of a strawberry and is very slow in ripening.
It has a height of about 12m.

The habitat of the Strawberry Tree is generally in immature oak woods and developing woodland.

The Strawberry Tree’s natural native distribution is the south west of Ireland.   It is also found in the Mediterranean region.

The Strawberry Tree is propagated and grown from its seed, and natural propagation is aided by birds that eat its seed.

The timber of the Strawberry Tree is a fine grained,
very hard pink wood.

The Strawberry Tree berries are edible, but have a very unpleasant flavour.
