The Whitebeam

Whitebeam - Sorbus aria.  Of the family - Rosacea.  Related species that perhaps are hybrids are between the Sorbus aria and Sorbus torminalis (Wild Service Tree). 

It is a British native tree with a natural native distribution that does not include Euxton and Lancashire.

The Whitebeam is a medium sized deciduous tree with red
berries, that reaches a height of about 20m.

The primary habitat of the Whitebeam is in woods generally in association with the other British natives including the ash, beech, field maple, hawthorn and wych elm.

The Whitebeam’s natural native distribution is southern England and western Ireland.   It is also found across central
and southern Europe.

The propagation of the Whitebeam from its seed which are black seeds similar to the pips of the Apple.

The timber of the Whitebeam is a quite hard good brown wood. The main uses of the wood are tool handles, wood turning, furniture and plywood.

Jam and wine can be made from the edible fruit.
