The Wild Cherry

Wild Cherry - Prunus avium.  Also known as the Gean, Irish Crann silin, and is of the family - Rosaceae.

The related species are cultivated cherries that are derived from the Prunus avium, it is also related to the Prunus padus.

The Wild Cherry is a small deciduous tree with round red fruit. 
It is highly rated for timber and grows to a height of about 5m, with an age of up to 200 years.

Its habitat is mostly on fertile soils that are rich none acid soils.
It is found in woodlands and hedgerows.
It has very good firewood properties and it burns with a fragrance of its blossom
The Wild Cherry has a natural native distribution throughout most of the British Isles, with the exception of northern Scotland. It is also widespread in Europe.

The propagation of the Wild Cherry is from its seed, which is deeply dormant.  Also grown from the cuttings of young trees.


The Wild Cherry timber is a reddish brown wood.  The uses of the wood is turnery, furniture, veneers and decorative panelling.

It has very good firewood properties and it burns with a
fragrance of its blossom.

The Wild Cherry as an edible black fruit, which the birds may quickly strip from the tree.
